Meet the Studio
Design Studio · Guatemala & Mexico
About the Maker
This independent design studio works with artisans in Guatemala and Mexico. The studio creates handcrafted furniture, home goods, and objects in collaboration with artisan communities across Central America.
Their practice is rooted in preserving and working alongside traditional craft techniques, particularly within Guatemalan weaving and handcraft traditions, while presenting the work through a contemporary design lens. Each piece reflects a balance between cultural heritage and modern form.
At SOWA Collective, we include this studio for its commitment to artisan collaboration and their role in connecting traditional craftsmanship with present-day design contexts.
Craft & Process
The studio works directly with artisans in Guatemala and surrounding regions, supporting the production of handmade goods through established craft techniques. Many of their textile-based pieces involve traditional weaving methods, developed and maintained within local artisan communities.
Production is rooted in collaboration, with an emphasis on preserving existing skills rather than replacing them with industrial processes. Variations in texture, weave, and finish are inherent to the handmade nature of the work.
Design Approach
The studio’s approach brings together traditional craft knowledge and contemporary design sensibilities. Rather than treating craft as decorative, the studio presents it as a functional and structural foundation for modern objects.
Their work emphasizes material integrity, simplicity, and the continuation of cultural making practices within a global design context.
Why SOWA
We include this studio for its clear connection to artisan production systems and their ongoing collaboration with craft communities in Guatemala. Their work reflects SOWA Collective’s focus on objects that are grounded in process, material, and human making.
Each piece carries the imprint of its origin—shaped by hand, and informed by tradition as well as design.

The Glass at SOWA Collective
In Guadalajara, Mexico, the studio works with glassblowers who gather, blow and shape every piece by hand. The material is 100% recycled glass, and the method is the oldest one there is: air, fire and a practiced hand. The process leaves its signature in every glass: small bubbles suspended in the wall, slight differences in height and tone from one piece to the next. In mouth-blown glass these are not imperfections - they are the record of how the piece was made, and they are why no two glasses in a set are exactly alike. Our smoked glass sets carry a deep smoke luster finish, in tall and short pours. Our ombre sets fade from clear to amber in a true ombre that lives in the glass itself, not in a coating. Both come in sets of four, made to be used every day.
